Declaring Your Major

The process for declaring your major is outlined below.

  • Consider attending the Majors Open House - a series of virtual events on April 14, 15 and 16, that will answer many of your questions and help you select a major.  Take advantage of these low-barrier, unique opportunities to interact on Zoom with upperclass students, professional advisors and faculty. All times are Eastern Central Time (EST).
  • By Tuesday, April 21 (DROP DATE): Discuss your Choice of Major decision with your advisor and complete the online Choice of Major Declaration form. You are expected to either declare a major or declare to be an Undesignated Sophomore by this date.
  • Your major declaration takes effect on June 08, 2020; the beginning of the summer term.
  • Additional advice to help you explore your options is found throughout this section.

Advising staff are also available to discuss your options with you. To make an appointment with one of us, write to firstyear@mit.edu.
