Academics and Registration
All transfer students must fulfill the General Institute Requirements (GIRs) to graduate. While you can expect to transfer some of the courses you completed at your previous college or university, you will likely have to take at least some of the GIRs at MIT. More detail about the GIRs, can be found in the Academics & Exploration section.
Transfer students are designated as sophomores when they enter the Institute. Once AP and transfer credit has been granted, the Registrar's Office may reclassify based on your incoming credit and any Advanced Standing Exams you pass. Most transfer students can expect to matriculate MIT within 3 years.
First-year grading (P/NR and ABC/NR) and credit limits does not apply to transfer students. Many opt to register for 4 classes initially, with 3 technical classes and a HASS to allow room to for academic and extracurricular exploration.
Incoming transfer students do not pre-register for classes. Registration information will be updated May 1, 2021. Your academic department advisor will guide you through class selection.
