Managing Academic Integrity Concerns

  • Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards is here to help if faculty discover potential academic misconduct:
    • Consultation with staff available to discuss options and how to connect with students to discuss concerns
    • Multiple options for resolution including faculty letter to file and referral to Committee on Discipline
    • Reaching out to OSCCS does not automatically trigger a complaint, and vast majority of issues are resolved without engaging full COD hearing or any consideration of suspension/expulsion
    • COD takes supportive and educational approach with potential policy violations
  • OSCCS can also help with proactive solutions before incidents happen:
    • Resources on website include tips on how to integrate academic integrity conversations into courses and sample language for syllabi: https://studentlife.mit.edu/osc/faculty/academic-misconduct
    • Current sponsors of MIT’s Academic Integrity Handbook, found at integrity.mit.edu
    • Pilot module, Learning About Academic Integrity at MIT being launched with all first-year undergraduate students this summer, exploring potential expansion to other student populations as optional resource
    • OSCCS offers outreach presentations to departments on responding to academic misconduct and handouts on academic integrity policies, potential consequences of violations and how to avoid them, and relevant support resources – reach out to osccs@mit.edu for more details
