Transfer Orientation – August

Orientation Schedule

You should continue to refer to the information directed to transfer students, not Class of 2028.

Orientation for all new students, including you takes place August 25 – August 30, 2024.

The 2024 Orientation Schedule will be available via the Guidebook App. mid-August. Events specific to transfer students will be listed.

Academics and Registration

All transfer students must fulfill the General Institute Requirements (GIRs) to graduate. While you can expect to transfer some of the courses you completed at your previous college or university, you will likely have to take at least some of the GIRs at MIT. More detail about the GIRs, can be found in the Academics & Exploration section.

The Registrar will designate you as a sophomore when you enter the Institute.  Once AP and transfer credit has been granted, you may be reclassify based on your incoming credit and any Advanced Standing Exams you pass. Most transfer students can expect to matriculate MIT within 3 years.

Your classes will be on grades. P/NR grading does NOT apply to transfers students. Although you do not have a credit limit, we recommend that students take for 4 classes initially, with 3 technical classes and a HASS to allow room for academic and extracurricular exploration.

Incoming transfer students do not pre-register for classes. Your academic department advisor will guide you through class selection at a scheduled time the week of Registration.
