Transfer Student Orientation – Spring

Orientation Schedule

The Orientation for Spring transfer students is Thursday, February 1, 2024
from 9:30-4pm. Schedule details will be communicated directly to the incoming students.

Academics and Registration

All transfer students must fulfill the General Institute Requirements (GIRs) to graduate. While you can expect to transfer some of the courses you completed at your previous college or university, you will likely have to take at least some of the GIRs at MIT. More detail about the GIRs, can be found in the  Academics & Exploration section.

Transfer students are designated as sophomores when they enter the Institute.  Once AP and transfer credit has been granted, the Registrar’s Office may reclassify based on your incoming credit and any Advanced Standing Exams you pass. Most transfer students can expect to matriculate MIT within 3 years.

Note that although first-year grading of Fall P/NR and Spring ABC/NR and credit limits do not apply to transfer students, transfer students are given Flex P/NR grading. This list breaks down the grading options for you:

  • Transfers entering after Fall 2020 and after – Flexible #4 P/NR for any class
  • Transfers entering prior to and including Fall 2017 2018, 2019, 2020 – Sophomore Exploratory and Junior-Senior #2 P/D/F

Incoming transfer students do not pre-register for classes.  Registration for Spring classes takes place from January 29 to February 2, 2024. The advisor assigned to you from your academic department will schedule a time to meet with you, usually in person, during that period to select your Spring classes. The first day of classes is Monday, February 5, 2024.
